When home waxing does not work, it is almost always one of five things: the hair is too short, the skin was not dry, the wax had cooled, you pulled too slowly, or you pulled the wrong way. All five are fixable, and none of them needs a different product — only a different order or motion.

We go through them in turn, with what to do instead of each.

1. The hair is too short

The most common reason wax "does not grip". Without enough length the wax adheres to the skin instead, and the hair stays put when you pull.

Instead: wait until the hair is long enough for the wax to grip. A few days of patience, and then one pass does it.

2. The skin is not completely dry

Moisture and body lotion both reduce adhesion — the wax slides on the skin.

Instead: let the skin dry fully after washing, and skip cream or oil before waxing.

3. The warm wax has cooled

As it cools, wax thickens, spreads less easily and leaves a thick, uneven layer.

Instead: work in smaller sections and keep the wax in the heater between them. With cold strips, warm them between your hands right before pressing them on.

4. You pull slowly

Pulling slowly and carefully is not gentler — the wax stays on the skin and the hairs do not come away together.

Instead: hold the skin taut with your free hand and pull in one firm, fast motion.

5. You pull the wrong way

Wax goes on in the direction the hair grows, and comes off against it. Swap the two and most of the hairs stay where they are.

Instead: apply with the grain, pull against it, and pull close to the skin rather than upwards.

And afterwards

Dissolve any wax left on the skin with wax cleaning oil rather than scrubbing. Ingrown hair and regular exfoliation have their own piece in the ingrown hair article.

The usage and warning instructions on the packaging govern in every case.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the wax not gripping the hair?

Most often the hair is too short, or the skin was not completely dry and free of oils before application.

Should I pull the strip fast or slowly?

Fast, in one firm motion, holding the skin taut. Pulling slowly leaves the wax on the skin.

Which direction do I pull?

Against the direction the hair grows, close to the skin — while application goes with the grain.

What if wax is left on my skin?

Dissolve it with wax cleaning oil. Scrubbing or picking is not needed.
