An ingrown hair forms when a regrowing strand doesn’t break through the skin but curls under it — red, sometimes inflamed. The good news: in most cases it’s preventable with a few simple habits.
The root cause: dead skin
The main cause of ingrown hairs is dead skin cells clogging the follicle. So the most important preventive step is regular exfoliation — 2–3 times a week, except on hair-removal days.
Correct waxing = fewer ingrowns
Root-removing waxing already reduces ingrowns compared to shaving. Key: always pull the strip against the hair’s growth direction, so the strand leaves cleanly rather than breaking.
Aftercare: hydrate and soothe
After waxing, wax cleansing oil removes residue and cares for the skin. In the following days keep the area hydrated — regrowing hair breaks through soft, supple skin more easily.
If one has already appeared
- Don’t pick or squeeze — it can cause infection.
- A warm compress and gentle exfoliation help bring the strand to the surface.
- If a spot is inflamed, painful or pus-filled, see a dermatologist.
